Trying out this blog feature for the first time with an update on what I am currently working on!
This is another map for Open Fortress (https://openfortress.fun/). I started out envisioning a map based on Rust from Modern Warfare; a high tower in the center of the map with multiple levels of verticality, providing a power position while exposing the player to enemies from multiple angles.
To further push the idea that the tower is where the player wanted to be, I added high tier weapons on every floor of the tower, with the powerful G.I.B. (the mod's version of the B.F.G.) at the top. The grated floor of the tower makes it so blast weapons can deal damage, pushing players out of their power position and to punish players from waiting around for weapons to spawn.
My first iteration proved to be too open after some basic blockout. There was too many angles just between the upper middle and lower outer play spaces. This led me to raise barriers between the middle play space that cuts through the outer loop of the level. Additionally I restricted how much the player in the tower was able to see, while also giving players the chance to retreat to safety. Some well placed rockets or grenade launcher shots can still easily flush a player out.
For the surrounding area, I went for a simple three lane approach, with plenty of paths that branch off that complement players always moving forward. The goal was to make fun loops to bunny hop around with clear paths to branch off from to get to another lane of the map. While all lanes are mostly self contained, there are a few angles where shots can be exchanged across lanes.
Here are some shots of it, in its current state.
